Lee Roy Yarbrough was one of the best Super Speedway riders in the 1960s. He competed in the 198 race from 1960 to 1972. Lee-Roy was out of the rough side of Jacksonville, FL and a high school drop-out. He recognized his need for speed early. At the age of 12, he built a ' his first Roadster 34 Ford Coupe.
He won his first event of the unpaved road Jacksonville Speedway in the age of 19. Everything with wheels caught his attention from drag racing Stockcars and everything in between. Lee Roy thrived on competition. His NASCAR career began in the sportsman Division, where he ran 11 races. He soon hungered for more powerful races, in the modified class three seasons win 83 times over. In 1967 Lee Roy hooked up with junior Johnson team, and it was a match in the sky. "That I have ever seen had Lee Roy the most raw talent,.," said junior. 1969 was the best season for Lee Roy, as he won seven races and 21 had top 10 finishes. He won the Daytona 500 a car length after a late battle with Buddy Baker. Then world was 600, lapping the entire Pack the Southern 500 in the last 4 rounds and the Charlotte at least twice. He went on a rampage!
If it were Winston million program at the time, he would have won it. At the end of the season he had 7 times won and was named American driver of the year. On a super Speedway, he set a record for consecutive wins in a season. The ' 69-Lee Roy began season behind him, performance to drop. Just as fast as it rose to the top, he began a downward spiral. A few bad wrecks in the early left him with some 70's heavy injuries and memory problems. After a period of rest, Lee-Roy tries for a comeback in the year 1972 in Martinsville. This was his last time driving a racing car to be; He destroyed in lap 109. He began to frequent the local hospital for treatment of memory lapses and violent behavior. In the mid-1970s he was institutionalized for alcoholism, and in 1984 a head injury from a fall after died.
